The North Highlands
Welcome to Scotland’s remote northern frontier - once known as the land of the Cat People. Today, the regions of Caithness, Sutherland, and Ross & Cromarty stretch northward, bordering Invernesshire and the Great Glen in the South.
Whether you’re accessing ferries to the Northern Isles or embarking on the world‑famous North Coast 500, you’ll be awed by the epic scale of this beautiful region.

Stunning mountains give way to towering sea cliffs, while the wondrous Flow Country - now a UNESCO World Heritage Site - holds secrets long forgotten. The cold North Sea on the east coast contrasts with the comparatively Mediterranean Atlantic on the west, divided by the ferocious Pentland Firth.
Travel the North Coast 500 from Inverness and back again: along the east coast through the Black Isle, Easter Ross, Dornoch, Dingwall, Tain, Helmsdale, Brora, and Wick, all the way to John o’Groats.
Across the north, discover Thurso, Tongue, and Lairg, before venturing out to the desolate and exposed Cape Wrath, Scotland’s dramatic edge of the world.
On the return journey drive through stunning Sutherland and Wester Ross before returning to Invernesshire.
