Tour Description

Journey into the ancient kingdom of Bernicia... and finish with a dram or two inspired by Northumbria’s Anglo Saxon past. This tour carries you through the rolling Scottish Borders and into the heartlands of the Anglo‑Saxon world. You’ll explore landscapes once ruled by early medieval kings, wander through one of Britain’s most storied castles and step inside a remarkable modern distillery that brings the Anglo‑Saxon age vividly to life. Typical itinerary: AM: - 08:30 - Pick up at your chosen location. (Timing based on an Edinburgh departure). - Stop off on the Anglo-Scots border where the historic River Tweed forms the border itself and visit the Homestead farm shop and café on the Hirsel estate. Enjoy something delicious to eat followed by a short walk. PM: - Explore Bamburgh Castle. Under Anglo-Saxon control from the 6th-11th Centuries this castle is steeped in ancient history. The capital of the ancient kingdom of Bernicia once stood here and held sway from the River Forth at Edinburgh to the River Tees at Middlesborough. The site has changed hands many times and the imposing, mostly Norman castle, now standing here is an awesome sight. - Visit Ad Gefrin Distillery. What has whisky got to do with the Anglo Saxons? Not much until this sensational distillery opened its doors, complete with an Anglo Saxon Museum and incredible re-creation of a great hall. This distillery takes its name from the nearby archaeological site of the palace of King Edwin of Northumbria (586-633). - 18:00 - Drop off at your accommodation. This is based on an Edinburgh drop-off. Why not combine your day tour into a longer adventure? Stay overnight in one of the region's fantastic hotels and pair this experience with another of our Scottish Borders or Northumberland tours.
