Walk the Edge of Empire - Hadrian’s Wall
Where Rome met the wild North - step into Britain’s Roman frontier.
Tour Description
Step back nearly two thousand years and explore one of the most extraordinary ancient sites in the world. Hadrian’s Wall once marked the very edge of the Roman Empire - a frontier of power, ambition, and engineering brilliance. Today, its dramatic remains stretch across wild Northumberland and Cumbrian landscapes, offering a glimpse into life on Rome’s northernmost boundary. On this unforgettable day tour, you’ll walk sections of the Wall, stand where Roman soldiers once stood, and uncover the mysteries of why this monumental structure was built. Your journey includes a visit to Vindolanda, a remarkable Roman fort and village (vicus) where archaeologists continue to unearth letters, shoes, tools, and everyday objects that bring the ancient world vividly to life. Typical Itinerary: AM: 08.00 – Pick up at your chosen location. (Timing based on an Edinburgh departure). - Enjoy a coffee break in the lively Borders market town of Jedburgh. - Travel south into Northumberland, walking along part of Hadrian's Wall for the first time. - Explore the fascinating Vindolanda Roman fort and vikus and enjoy lunch. PM: Take a scenic drive along Hadrian’s Wall, stopping at viewpoints and stretches of the Wall that showcase its scale and beauty.
