Royal Fife: Scotland’s Ancient Kingdom
Explore sacred resting places, a Renaissance palace, and charming coastal villages on this day tour.
Tour Description
Delve deep into the history of Fife - the playground of Scotland’s Monarchy for generations. Dunfermline Abbey is the final resting place of the bones of our great warrior King Robert the Bruce. Falkland palace, built by his descendant King James IV, stands as a Renaissance jewel amongst an ancient town, recently made famous as a filming location for the Outland series. Anstruther Harbour - bizarrely - was once a favourite haunt of the young King James V, disguised as a peasant as he wandered among his people. Typical itinerary: AM: - 08:30 - Pick up at your chosen location. (Timing based on an Edinburgh departure). - Enjoy panoramic views of the three iconic bridges from the South Queensferry viewpoint. - Visit the Kinghorn Alexander III monument. - Travel along the south coast of Fife - passing Lower Largo, Elie, St Monans, and Pittenweem - each offering beautiful historic harbours and buildings. Stops can be tailored to your interests. PM: - Lunch in Anstruther, perhaps the finest of Fife’s rejuvenated fishing harbours - a vibrant waterfront known for its atmosphere, fresh seafood, and what many claim are the best fish and chips in this part of Scotland. - Continue inland through the heart of Fife to Falkland, one of Scotland’s most beautiful historic villages. Falkland Palace, built in 1500, is a breathtaking Renaissance masterpiece. - Visit Dunfermline Abbey and Palace, the final resting place of King Robert the Bruce's bones. - 18:00 - Drop off at your accomodation. (Please note this is based on an Edinburgh return). Why not turn your day tour into a longer adventure?
